Preventing Mistakes

To prevent a repeat of the Apollo 1 disaster, rigorous tests and procedures were implemented. Crewed flights were discontinued during the 21-month gap, but training continued. The Apollo command and service modules were closely watched for long periods of time, and they were clearly more cautious. Fortunately, on October 11, 1968, the spacecraft returned eleven days after launch, and the mission was a complete technological success. The success of the mission inspired NASA to continue with its space program, and Apollo 8 was also a success. It eventually led to the Apollo 11 mission, which became infamous.

The astronauts picked for the Apollo 11 mission included Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, and Neil Armstrong. The mission commander was Armstrong, while the command module pilot was Collins. The command spacecraft would transport the three of them back to Earth. Finally, as the lunar module pilot, Aldrin was in charge of landing the spacecraft on the moon’s surface and returning to the command module.
