As a result of the president’s pledge, NASA’s space program has been accelerated. In the 1960s, the Gemini missions were launched. Aldrin was a member of the crew of Gemini XII, the concluding mission of the Gemini series. The program had completed all of the many maneuvers and operations required for the eventual moon-landing endeavor in less than two years.

The Apollo program was born when it was time to devise a strategy for landing men on the moon. Let’s just say things didn’t go well at first. Everything went wrong when the three-man crew set to board the Apollo 1 died during a practice drill in January 1967.
