For many people, college is the first time being away from home. Being unsupervised opens the door for new opportunities and responsibilities. Sometimes we get caught up in the overwhelming college life that when we stop to think, we wind up feeling homesick. With these little hacks, you can feel at home even when you’re 3,000 miles away from your friends and family.
Hang Up Photos
Cover your walls with pictures of your friends and family to keep positive vibes in your room. Sometimes empty walls can create a sad environment, but with photos of your friends posted on the walls, you can manage your homesickness and be reminded of what’s waiting for you when you go on break. When you invite your college friends over to your dorm room you can also show off all your amazing home friends. Just be careful not to spend too much time reminiscing on these memories and get out there and create new memories!
Bring An Item From Home
Whether it’s your special stuffed animal or blanket, don’t be afraid to bring an item that reminds you of home. This can help you during more difficult times and be a great source of comfort during times of stress. It will also make you feel way closer to home no matter how far away you are.
Warm Up Your Floor
Add a rug underneath your bed to make getting up in the morning a little bit easier. You don’t need to go big, even a 10$ one from Target or Bed Bath and Beyond will do the job. This can easily spruce up your room and add the comfort that you’re looking for.
Stack Up With Foods From Home
Depending on where you choose to study, they may not have the home foods that you adore. It’s smart to bring a few snacks with you to school or even have your parents send you a care package with those items. During exam time it always helps to have your favorite dark chocolate almonds from Trader Joes by your bedside, Instead of calling your mom crying because you’re stressed and wish you had your favorite snack. There’s no harm in stacking up before you head off for school.
